Hi everyone –
My name is Eric D. Brown.
By day, I am a data scientist, consultant and entrepreneur with a focus on building new things, making old things work better and using data to solve complex problems. I write about all those things over at my main blog at http://ericbrown.com/.
One of my passions is photography. I picked up a camera about 10 years ago and have loved photography ever since. I consider myself a semi-professional photographer because I do make some money from my photography but it isn’t anywhere near my full income. All of the money I’ve made from my photography work has been from selling some prints / images and making a little bit of cash from sponsored content and shoots.
I am not a professional photographer and, even though I sometimes think I’d love to do this full-time, I don’t think I will ever be a full-time professional. That’s not for lack of ‘wanting it’ but its really more to do with the fact that I absolutely love entrepreneurship just as much as photography and so far in life, I’ve made a much nicer living in that world than in the photography world.
All that said, I am starting to move toward spending much more of my time in the world of photography (hence the starting of this blog). Because of that, I wanted to start a blog to share whatever insights I may have learned over the years as well as provide a place to share stories about my life as a semi-pro photographer. I’ve written my personal blog for over 10 years and wanted a place to talk specifically about photography, so I started Semi Pro Photo.
My current gear list is below – I’ll add to it / change it up as time goes by.
- Sony a7r iii
- Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G
- Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM
- Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM
- Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5–5.6 GM
The one thing that Sony is missing for me is really long glass. The 100-400 works great but I would love to see a 500 to 600 mm lens in FE mount come out soon. I know the 400 2.8 FE is coming out in 2018 and that might work well for me for birding / wildlife but that 500mm range is pretty sweet for wildlife and birds (with 1.4x and/or 2.0x extenders).
What to Expect from this site
I’ll be posting blogs, videos and maybe even a podcast at some point in the future. I’ll be doing reviews of gear that I use. If people want to send me free gear to review (hint hint hint ;)) I’ll provide honest reviews of that gear as well. My plan for this site is to share my love of photography with others as well as hopefully helping some folks out there who are wanting to learn more about the field and hoping to get into this as a hobby or as a profession.
I hope you enjoy the site. I hope you come back often.
